Asplund won't be charged

Crow Wing County sheriff's investigators have concluded their investigation into Brainerd City Council member Frank Asplund's traffic accident with a Brainerd squad car last week.

Asplund won't be charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, Crow Wing County Sheriff Dick Ross said today.

On July 11, Asplund was backing out of his driveway when he collided with Brainerd police officer Mike Weinhandl's squad car. Asplund said he was moving his vehicle into his garage.

A breath test wasn't administered at the accident scene, though Asplund admitted to having one alcoholic drink. Ross said today he is conducting an internal review to make sure his deputies handled the situation correctly.
