Judge Leitner retires

Applications are now being accepted for the Ninth Judicial District trial court bench post in Brainerd left open by the retirement of Judge John R. Leitner.

Leitner, who was first appointed to the bench by Gov. Arne Carlson on Aug. 1, 1992, retired May 31, it was learned Friday. He won re-election in 1994 and 2000 and was elected to another six -year term in 2006.

He graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1971 and from the William Mitchell College of Law in 1977. Leitner was in private practice from 1975 to 1978 and was Aitkin County attorney from 1979 to 1992.

The Commission on Judicial Selection announced that licensed attorneys who are residents of the Ninth Judicial District may request an application for this position by calling John Hultquist at (651) 296-0019, via e-mail at john.hultquist@state.mn.us or by writing to Ronald J. Schutz, chair of the Commission on Judicial Selection, 130 State Capitol, St. Paul, MN, 55155.

Applicants are asked not to contact the commission members individually as the nine at-large members and the four district members will conduct interviews at a later date.
