ST. PAUL (AP) -- The Minnesota Wild said Thursday they signed center Mikko Koivu to a multiyear contract.
Koivu, 20, was the Wild's first-round selection and sixth pick overall in the 2001 NHL entry draft. He will play for TPS Turku of the Finnish Senior League this season and participate in the Wild's training camp at the start of the 2004-2005 season.
Terms were not disclosed.
The 6-foot-2, 200-pound Koivu played in 37 games last season for TPS Turku and finished sixth on the team in scoring, with seven goals and 13 assists for 20 points, despite missing 19 games due to injury.
The Turku native also played for the junior squad at TPS Turku from 1999-2001, won a silver medal in the 2001 World Junior Championships with three assists in seven games, and captained the Finnish under-18 team at the 2001 Under-18 World Championships.
Koivu is the younger brother of Montreal Canadiens captain Saku Koivu.
