LAKE MILLE LACS
East - Crawlers continue to produce plenty of walleyes during the day on the 22- to 27-foot gravel bars. The evening hours are best spent on the rocks in nine to 14 feet of water with slip bobbers and leeches. Smallmouth bass remain active on the shallow rocks, but muskie reports remain limited.
West - Spinner rigs and rainbow minnows are turning a lot of walleyes on the mud flats during the day. Trolling crankbaits off the mud in 30 feet or more also has worked during midday hours. At night, slip bobbers and leeches are working best off the flats in 28 to 33 feet of water. Seguchie's Flat, Sherman's Flat, Seven Mile Flat, and Eight Mile Flat all have produced fish. Muskies and pike are chasing crankbaits on the weedlines, while smallmouth bass remain active on the rock points.
LEECH LAKE AREA
Walleyes are hitting spinners and crawlers in 17 to 22 feet off Grassy Point or leeches and Lindy Rigs in 14 to 18 feet off Stony Point. You'll hit walleyes with live bait in 20 feet off Pipe Island and Bear Island throughout the day. During low-light periods, Shad Raps are triggering walleyes off the points in 10 to 14 feet. Muskie action is slow, but the rice beds are holding numbers of bass and Shingobee Bay is a safe bet for panfish.
LAKE WINNIBIGOSHISH
Leeches are the ticket for walleyes in 22 to 25 feet on the north-end humps, Horseshoe Bar, Sugar Bar, and the Snaghole. You'll also pop a few walleyes with a jig and minnow combination in the six-foot weeds. Expect northern pike to be mixed in with the walleyes and perch action is spotty with some fish being found as deep as 35 to 40 feet and others in six to nine feet.
BRAINERD/NISSWA AREA
Lindy Rigs tipped with redtails have provided steady walleye action during the morning hours in 18 to 25 feet on Gull Lake and North Long Lake. The deep weed edges on most lakes are holding bass and northern pike. Look for bigger sunfish and crappies on the established weedlines of most lakes.
CASS LAKE AREA
Walleyes remain shallow on Cass Lake and Pike Bay Lake. A jig and minnow or Lindy Rig and leech is working best during the day, while crankbaits are the ticket during the evening hours in water as shallow as four feet. The 10- to 12-foot cabbage in Pike Bay Lake is holding perch. Crappie action is good early in the day in eight to 10 feet throughout Allen's Bay on Cass, Buck Lake, and Kitchi Lake. Muskie action is slow, but northern pike are hitting minnows on the weedlines of Allen's Bay.
CROSS LAKE AREA
Walleyes are hitting leeches on long Lindy Rigs in 18 to 26 feet during the day throughout the Whitefish Chain. At night, trolling crankbaits has turned walleyes along the weedlines. Bass action remains hot around the docks and shoreline breaks with plastic worms, spinnerbaits, or plastic frogs. Northern pike are hitting large sucker minnows on the weedlines and you will find crappies suspended off the deep weedlines of most lakes.
CUSHING AREA
Leeches or redtails under a bobber are turning walleyes at night in 25 to 30 feet on Lake Alexander and Fish Trap Lake. Bass action is strong throughout the area with lakes Shamineau, Alexander, and Fish Trap leading the way for size and numbers. Panfish action is slow and muskie anglers are seeing fish, but having a difficult time getting them to bite.
EMILY AREA
Crappies are suspended over 15 to 20 feet on Moulten Lake. You'll find suspended bluegills over 20 feet on the north end of Roosevelt Lake. There's an evening walleye bite with leeches on Ruth Lake in 15 feet and the bass bite remains strong around the docks here as well. Work sucker minnows on the 10- to 15-foot weedlines of West Fox Lake for northern pike.
