The Brainerd Explosion girls' slow-pitch softball team snapped a 9-9 tie with a 13-run sixth inning to defeat the Oakdale Polars 22-10 in the championship game of the United States Specialty Sports Association state tournament July 11 in North St. Paul.
Stephanie Neugebauer and Jenny Sather both hit home runs for Brainerd, which trailed 9-1 before scoring eight times in the fourth inning.
Neugebauer, Sather and Jessie Mohs each drove in four runs while Neugebauer, Mohs, Tiffany Dixon and Lindsey Jourdan each had three hits.
Earlier in the tournament, Brainerd downed Minnetonka 19-9, Golden Valley 14-6 and the Polars 13-12 before losing to the Polars 14-4 to force the deciding game of the double-elimination event.
The Explosion, 10-8 overall, will compete at the Minnesota Sports Federation state tournament July 24-25 in Sauk Rapids.
