Youth group van catches fire in Tennessee

Posted: Monday, July 17, 2000

Several members of a Minnesota church youth group who were headed to Alabama for a volunteer project were injured Saturday when their van caught fire in Tennessee.

A van carrying 15 youth group members from New Life Church in Woodbury ran over some lumber that fell off a truck in front of them. That's when the van caught fire on the driver's side.

Three students and a chaperone were burned, and a purse with more than $5,000 for food, hotel and gas expenses also was destroyed. The van's trailer also caught fire. The students were treated and released. The chaperone's condition wasn't immediately available. The group, which was planning to work on a Habitat for Humanity project, was staying near Brentwood, Tenn.
