Rain -- Up to seven inches in some places choked roads throughout the Brainerd area Wednesday night, slowing down traffic as vehicles negotiated water up to a foot deep in some areas.

The Rev. Dallas Young, former pastor of First Lutheran Church, Brainerd, will return to preach at Sunday's service at the Church of the Open Air. He will use his theme for the sermon, "Bad News and Good News."

James "Skeeto" Peterson, a familiar and formidable figure in many a Brainerd shortstop and city tournament here since 1959, has been playing well again this summer and is a heavy favorite to annex shortstop championship a second straight year.

Thunder and lightening rocked the earth and showers flooded the Brainerd area and almost swept "Home Sweet Home" away, but it wasn't Mother Nature's doing, it was the Rotarians splitting the heavens and showering our softball grounds with defiant acceptance of a three-game contest with the Lions.

The Brainerd lakes area had its siege of hot weather, but nobody was prostrated. There is always a lake or river to jump into to avoid disintegration. By a remarkable coincidence gasoline took a cent jump just at the time when tourist travel is the heaviest.
