Fans at North Central Speedway Tuesday will see many of the top Wissota Late Model racers in the Wissota Tri-Star Challenge Series show sponsored by WW Thompson Concrete and Miller Lite, veteran late model racer Tommy Thompson of Baxter said.
Thompson, who races at the half-mile Alexandria Viking Speedway, said he estimates 30 late model racers will register for the show. Hot laps start at 6:45 p.m.
NCS Pure Stocks and Wissota Midwest Modifieds also will race Tuesday. A total of $1,000 is up for grabs for the winner of the Midwest Modified.
Along with Thompson, local drivers expected to race are Dan Yaunick, Rick Sweet and Thompson's son Terrell. Terrell is in his first year behind the wheel of a late model, which reach speeds of 130 mph on the straightaways in Alexandria. Yaunick and Sweet are both former Wissota Super Stock track champions at NCS.
At the latest series round, round seven in Alexandria Wednesday night, 44 late models registered. Only 24 made the show, Thompson said. He said late model racers like this series because the prize money is high. The winner at NCS earns $2,000.
"A lot of good drivers follow (the series)," said Tommy Thompson, who won the late model points championship at Alexandria last season.
The top three Wissota Late Model racers as of July 9 were John Kaanta of Elk Mound, Wis., Duane Mahder of Eau Claire, Wis., and Darrell Nelson of Duluth.
Kaanta finished second in Wednesday's race at Alexandria. Jeff Wildung, Nassau, won the 30-lap feature.
Thompson is 19th in the series points as of July 2. Yaunick is 35th and Terrell is 47th.
Thompson's best finish this season has been second. He said he has finished among the top five racers about 10 times this season.
Dondelinger led feature
The I-94 Web site reported that D.J. Dondelinger, Brainerd, led the ASA Super Late Model feature at the Raceway Saturday before finishing seventh.
On lap nine, he took the lead and held it until lap 18, the Web site reported.
The Web site also reported that Cal Lease, Little Falls, lost the lead in the Great North Legends feature in the final lap. Coming out of turn four, Lease turned a little sideways. Lease finished second.
