Holiday payoff
If irony is dead, then the only way to describe Holiday is to say this band simply doesn't care what anyone thinks. At a show last month at the Blue Ox in Brainerd, the Fargo-Moorhead four-piece cranked out undisciplined renditions of Britney Spears and NSync songs for a sparse Thursday night crowd.
This just in: 'Anchorman' a missed opportunity
There's a scene in "Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy" where the No. 1 TV news team in San Diego, headed up by the titular newsman (Will Ferrell), is challenged to a fight by the No. 2 team, anchored by Wes Mantooth (Vince Vaughn). All heck breaks loose, and before long most of the Slack Pack is involved, including Luke Wilson as the head of the perpetually-last-place telecast and Ben Stiller as the Spanish language anchor.

A recent letter urged us to see Michael Moore's film "Fahrenheit 9/11" that we may be properly informed regarding the political realities of our time. I have lived through 16 presidential campaigns (that I can remember) and never have I witnessed anything even close to this scurrilous attack on President Bush in this film.

Both the Minneapolis and St. Paul newspapers on Wednesday covered the President's visit to Duluth yesterday. I was surprised -- not -- that it was the war protesters once again on the front page of the Dispatch. Our country's President was visiting northern Minnesota the day before, but that story was nowhere to be found. Oh wait, there it is. On page 12A. I realize the war protesters photo was used to promote the upcoming free speech symposium. Fine. But there would have been plenty of room on the front page to inform your readers about the president's visit to northern Minnesota...that is, if you had bothered to bump a story about the "storm that never hit" to a different page. Because, wow, that was front-page news.
Vox Pop
One town has proposed no smoking for a local park to protect others from secondhand smoke, yet they will spray with chemicals that kill butterflies? How about the cloud of arid smoke from the fireworks? Let's use common sense.

Ramsey County judge's ruling that struck down -- at least for now -- Minnesota's handgun permit law may have repercussions that go beyond the measure that was commonly called the conceal and carry law.
OUR OPINION: CELEBRITIES
Sen. Mike Ditka, R-Ill. Well, it might have been fun, but the former Chicago Bears coach quashed his potential candidacy this week when he opted not to bite on the Republican Party's overtures to make him its last-minute replacement for Jack Ryan, the previous GOP candidate who stepped down after embarrassing details from his divorce proceedings were publicized.
