Mamie Wynn Downs, 90, Brainerd, died Thursday, July 13, 2000, at St. Joseph's Hospital in Brainerd, following a short illness.
She was born March 28, 1910, to Edward and Agusta (Vincent) Wynn in Randall. She was raised in rural Hackensack and graduated from Hackensack High School. She married Harry N. Downs on Nov. 7, 1928. Following their marriage, they lived in northern Minnesota where he worked for various newspapers. In 1940, they and a partner purchased the Aiken Republican, which they operated until 1945 when they moved to Wolf Point, Mont. There they purchased The Herald-News and later the Poplar Standard and Culbertson Searchlight. She semi-retired from the newspaper business in 1994 when she moved back to Minnesota. She sold her interests in the Montana newspapers in March 1999.
Survivors include two sons, Harry N. Downs, Wolf Point, Mont., Robert N. Downs, Hackensack; seven grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; and two great great grandsons.
Her husband, two sisters, a brother and a daughter, Agnes Isle, died earlier.
Services will be 1 p.m. Monday at the Union Congregational Church in Hackensack. Burial will be in the Hillcrest Cemetery in Hackensack.
Friends may call from 6-8 p.m. today at the Northland Chapel in Pine River.
