Garden Club works at Garrison concourse
GARRISON - Northern Lights Garden Club has been planting and taking care of flowers in the pots on the Garrison Concourse. Each year the club purchases plants for all the pots, cleans them out and plants them and cares for them throughout the summer.
Nisswa Garden Club will meet July 22
NISSWA - The Nisswa Garden Club will meet July 22 at the Lutheran Church of the Cross in Nisswa. Social hour begins at noon with a luncheon at 12:30 p.m. followed by the business meeting and program.
The program, "Floral Design Workshop," will be led by coordinators Jim Sherwood, Jill Macnamara and the program committee. Call Lorraine at 568-4359 for reservations. Backus Lions Fly-In pancake breakfast set
BACKUS - The 15th annual Backus Lions Fly-In pancake/sausage breakfast will be 7:30 a.m. to noon July 25 at the Backus Airport, just west of Highway 371. Juice and coffee also will be available.
Schedule permitting, the North Memorial Medivac helicopter will land at 11 a.m. A demonstration will be given with the "Jaws of Life" rescue apparatus on an old car. Besides enjoying breakfast, spectators can watch the planes land and take off, talk to firefighters and First Responders and look at a fire engine up close. Raffle tickets for several items will be sold.
The breakfast benefits the Backus Fire Department and First Responders. Cost is $5 in advance, $5 at the door and $3 for children younger than 12. Fly-in pilots eat free.
Advance tickets are available from Backus Lions members, Backus Fire Department members and First Responders. The Backus Lions Club and Air D, Inc. sponsor this event.
Habitat for Humanity plans groundbreaking
LITTLE FALLS - Habitat for Humanity of Morrison County invites the public to participate in the groundbreaking of its 11th home in Morrison County at 6 p.m. Monday in Little Falls. The address of the home is 710 12th St. N.W.

Last chance to apply for Brainerd in Bloom
Thursday is the final day for folks with green thumbs to apply to participate in the Brainerd in Bloom project.
Interested individuals - who can include homeowners, business owners, church members, rental property owners - should complete an application form available at the Crow Wing County Extension Office, Northland Arboretum or the Brainerd Lakes Chamber tower office. The application must be postmarked by Thursday and mailed to Brainerd in Bloom, Northland Arboretum, 14250 Conservation Drive, Baxter, MN, 56401 or e-mailed to BrainerdinBloom@gmail.com.
Judges will visit the sites from July 26-30.
Mission Fire Fair planned for Saturday
The 23rd annual Mission Fire Fair will begin at 11:30 a.m. Saturday in Mission Park, located seven miles north of Merrifield on County Road 3 and one mile east on Mission Park Drive.
The event includes door prizes all afternoon, a Safe House and the North Air helicopter, a roast pork dinner, brats, hot dogs, popcorn and beverages. Also planned are games, auctions, raffles and a chicken pooping contest.
The annual fair is sponsored by the Mission Township Firefighters Relief Association.
Forestview enrollment forms available
BAXTER - Parents with children entering fifth- through eighth-grade who are new to the Brainerd School District, or transferring from another school, should note the following enrollment procedures for the upcoming school year.
In order to assure that the child is scheduled for classes and school district transportation by the first day of school, Sept. 7, it is necessary for parents to complete the enrollment forms for Forestview Middle School before Aug. 15. Benefit for Ken Rood scheduled Saturday
A benefit for Ken Rood, who has been diagnosed with AML, an aggressive form of leukemia, is set for 2 p.m. Saturday until 1 a.m. Sunday at the Green Lantern on Highway 18.
Rood is currently hospitalized and his family is encountering mounting medical and household bills.
A silent auction will be conducted from 2 to 6 p.m. Saturday and a Wii bowling tournament will start at 2 p.m. Dinner will start at 5 p.m.
Acoustic entertainment will be provided by Seth Doud and Andy Fischer. Bands that will play include Kings Ransom and Random. A free sober cab will be available for the local area.

Red Cross blood drive Thursday
There will be an American Red Cross blood drive at Lord of Life Lutheran Church, Baxter (the intersection of Highway 210 and Knollwood Drive) from 1 to 5 p.m. Thursday at Lord of Life Lutheran Church.
