20 years ago (1989)

For the first time in years Dr. Harold Kletschka is free to go back into the research lab. Legal shackles that for 12 years kept the Brainerd physician out have been broken and he can again pursue development of an implantable, artificial heart.

30 years ago (1979)

That thud, thud, thud sound emanating from the hayloft of a barn on a dead-end road was just heavyweight boxer Scott Ledoux pounding a variety of punching bags preparing for his bout with Ken Norton on July 22 in San Diego.

40 years ago (1969)

(Photo) This young lady was unsuccessful as she tried to climb the greased pole to get the money on top of it at the Merrifield Fun Festival. Close to 3,000 persons turned out for the event, which included horseshoe contest, sack races and a barbecue.

60 years ago (1949)

For five innings spectators at Memorial Park were treated to a major league caliber baseball game - that is until the sixth inning when C-I fell apart and let the Brainerd Braves score five unearned runs on five errors and win 5-1.

80 years ago (1929)

Upon the fair brow of Miss Margaret Anderson of Brainerd rested the crown of Miss Minnesota following her coronation at the St. Paul Hippodrome Friday night. The 22-year-old Anderson is the only child of Andrew Andersons of East Oak Street.
