Halverson wins second, Hagenson claims her first title

BREEZY POINT - Brainerd's Sean Halverson made it two out of three as he shot 76 to win the third leg of the Pepsi Lakes Junior Cup Sunday at Deacon's Lodge.

The Preserve's Kelly Hagenson shot 104 to secure her first victory in the five-tournament format. Halverson's 4-over round was peppered with three birdies as he led the Legacy team followed by teammate Michael Strain's 87.

"My chipping and putting were the best parts of my game," said Halverson. "Getting up and down was key because I had a lot of bad shots into the greens. Everything around the greens was good. Everything else was a struggle."

Halverson needed 32 putts to get around the 6,418-yard Arnold Palmer-designed course. He birdied the 164-yard third hole, the 320-yard 12th hole and the 512-yard 14th hole. He shot nines of 38-38.

"I was hitting the ball really low so the wind didn't have much effect on my ball," said Halverson. "For the conditions and how I was striking the ball I was really pleased with the way I scored. The course was in really good shape, but there were some tough pin placements."

Hagenson fired nines of 53-51 for her score. The Staples-Motley varsity player said she drove the ball well.

"My putting and chipping didn't go very well," said Hagenson. "The win was really blowing, but the course was really nice. It was fun. I had a lot of fun playing."

Hagenson said her game picked up on the back nine. She paced the girls' field by seven strokes over runner-up Jenny Muesing. Two-time winner and Hagenson's high school teammate Cydney Hasselberg didn't play Sunday.

"I knew she wasn't here so I was hoping to do very well," she said.

The Deacon's Lodge team defended its home turf as they shot a 482 led by Jonas Dale's 87. Michael Roedl fired a 90.

Michael Foley shot 88 and Nick Forsberg carded an 89 to lead the Classic squad to second place 491. The Classic is in the season-long lead.

Travis Myers' 88 popped the Preserve into third place. He was helped by Charlie Hollinbeck's 94.

Trent Hagenson's 98 led the fourth-place Pines team.
