Imagine the relief of headline writers in Los Angeles. Mike Krzyzewski last week rejected a rich offer to coach the Los Angeles Lakers.
So Coach K (spelling it once is enough to wear you out) is staying in the college coaching ranks. He'll continue to coach the Duke Blue Devils.
The professional Lakers dangled a $40 million, five-year deal in front of Coach K. That would be enough to lure many people from the picturesque tobacco country around Durham, N.C., to the pollution of Los Angeles.
But not Coach K. He is staying put.
To which we say hooray. It's time more people in the athletic world put values over money. And it's clear values came first for Coach K.
Besides, who in his right mind would take the Lakers' coaching job? The superstars on the team think they are the coach. Their success has gone to their heads. Many are threatening to leave Los Angeles and play for other teams.
It's such a sticky situation that they should make Jack Nicholson, the movie star who is courtside for all the Lakers' games, the coach.
The only down side of Mike Krzyzewski staying at Duke is that the other college teams that have been trying to beat the Blue Devils will be in for more tough competition. He's had three national championships in his 24-year tenure.
