Beardsley, Salazar to run at Detroit Lakes

Posted: Saturday, July 12, 2003

DETROIT LAKES -- Dick Beardsley and Alberto Salazar, two of the greatest distance runners, will be reunited at the Dick Beardsley one-half marathon, 5-kilometer run and race walk Sept. 6.

In 1982, Beardsley and Salazar ran the Boston Marathon, stride for stride, to break course and American records. Salazar won in 2:08.51 with Beardsley two steps back at 2:08.53.

It would later be called "The Duel In The Sun." Twenty-one years later, their times remain the third- and fourth-fastest marathons by American men.

Mexican players are joined by players from Littleton, Colo., Robbinsdale and the Brainerd area. Instruction is provided by Jerry Johnson, arena supervisor at HCC; Ace Slepica, former arena supervisor and HCC fitness specialist who plays hockey in Japan; and Jensen, a former player with the Minnesota North Stars and Los Angeles Kings.
