PEQUOT LAKES - Pequot Lakes Community Theater is staging a musical comedy called "A Don't Hug Me County Fair" that began Wednesday and runs through Tuesday, with the exception of Sunday, that takes us back to Bunyan Bay, Minn.
Showtime is 8 p.m. in the Pequot Lakes High School Theater, where the Bunyan County Fair is the biggest thing that's happened since the winter carnival snowplow parade. Bunyan Bar owners Gunner and Clara Johnson are pumped for the County Fair Fishing Contest and the Miss Walleye Queen competition. Bernice, the pretty waitress, sees a chance to win Miss Walleye Queen and aspires to have her face carved in butter at the State Fair. The trouble begins when Clara decides she also wants to be Miss Walleye Queen and when Gunner's estranged twin sister, Trigger, shows up on the same quest things get ugly.
Jenny Kiffmeyer sang as Sue Johnson, Charlie Johnson and CJ Anderson looked on during rehearsal of "A Don't Hug Me County Fair," a Pequot Lakes Community Theater musical comedy.
Three of the five actors reprise their roles from a previous staging, "Don't Hug Me," also a creation of Minnesota natives Phil and Paul Olson. Four actors participated in last fall's scripted stage reading in Pequot Lakes, which was a means for the Olsons to obtain feedback and refine the script.
The summer musical is a direct result, with original songs such as "Our Butter Face Queen," "Pontoon Ladies," and "My Campfire is Burnin' For You."
