The Brainerd American Legion baseball team split a doubleheader with Grand Rapids Monday at Adamson Field.
Brainerd lost the first game 10-6 even though Brad Gangestad was 2-for-4 and Chris Klabo 2-for-3. Joey Tautges and Clabo smacked doubles. Chad Weiss started for Brainerd. He gave up five hits and four earned runs, walked four and struck out two in three innings. Kevin Mertens finished, yielding four earned runs and five hits in four innings, walked four and struck out five.
"Our pitchers had trouble throwing strikes," Brainerd coach Paul Jenkins said. "When we did throw strikes, they were up high. We also threw several wild pitches with runners on. It's tough to win when you don't throw strikes."
In the second game, Ryan Browning pitched a 5-hitter in a 6-0 victory. He gave up five hits and did not walk a batter. Brainerd won despite collecting just three hits.
"Browning pitched an excellent game," Jenkins said. "He threw strikes and was at the knees all night long. We didn't hit well, but we stole some bases, which led to runs."
