The skies threatened as a sudden downpour fell over North Central Speedway just before the gates opened on L&M Steel Night Saturday. Fortunately, the rain was short-lived and a hot and steamy night of racing got under way.
After his car was destroyed at Wednesday's Midwest Modified Mayhem, Mark Anderson picked up another chassis and he and his crew spent three days and nights switching any salvageable parts to the new car and readying it to race.
Winning his heat race and having much deserved good luck in the draw, Anderson bolted out to lead the pack from his front row starting position. Close behind, John Thompson and George Mattson also had their sights set on the top spot, while Anderson dropped back to third. As the duo ran door to door, the two split the lap car of Wade Bandel, who drifted into Thompson, handing the lead to Mattson.
Luckily for Thompson, caution flew before a lap was completed, which put him back in front of Mattson, who again made the pass for the lead on lap 10. Craig Larson moved around Thompson for second and set out in pursuit of Mattson. But Mattson hung on to win the main event with Thompson nipping Larson at the line for second.
The caution flag was waved five times for the Pure Stocks while the race's first-half leader, Tom Segler, had the field covered. Cory Loidolt then swept around Segler using the outside groove to claim the top spot and extended his lead over pack. As the flagman waved the checkered, Loidolt claimed his second victory of the season.
Mark Johnson jumped out to a quick lead at the start of the Wissota Street Stock feature, while Kelly Wroolie and John Treichler ran wheel to wheel for second. Johnson and Treichler had checked out on the field when the only caution flag flew on lap 11, eliminating their significant lead.
As racing resumed, Johnson continued his dominance, leading every lap of the competition and taking home his first win of the season. Treichler and Travis Wermter crossed the finish line in second and third.
Tim Johnson, points leader in the Wissota Super Stocks, experienced failure in a steering component, causing him to take a hard right in front of the field at the start of his heat race. Erick Thiesse suffered the most damage from the incident but it appeared that both racers had repaired their cars as they made it onto the speedway for their feature. Johnson's steering broke again, sending him to the infield and unable to take the green flag.
The Super Stocks had a tough go of it as two cautions slowed things down. From his second row starting spot, Butch Butcher turned sideways in front of oncoming traffic. Tim O'Brien incurred the worst damage and was done for the night.
Another unsuccessful first lap resulted and the caution waved again with Thiesse parked in the bottom of the corner.
The third time the green flag dropped, the Super Stocks put on a stellar performance, finishing all 20 laps, without a single stoppage.
Luke Hines picked up the lead on the second lap while Brad Jensen, Nick Musel, and Ed Jensen dueled to be No. 2.
The top four had spread out single file from the pack as the fifth spot was still up for grabs with the racers running two and three wide. Ed Jensen had slipped around Musel for third until Musel battled back and reclaimed the spot after a few laps. Victory lane saw a first-time visitor with Hines taking his first win and Brad Jensen finishing second.
