Erin MacDonald, Janelle Huss and Katie Erickson, all juniors at Brainerd High School, attended Bethel College in St. Paul recently for Minnesota Girls State, a program sponsored by the Brainerd American Legion Auxiliary Unit No. 255. The students practiced Americanism and good citizenship to provide them with an opportunity to live together as self governing citizens, to inform them about duties, privileges, rights and responsibilities of American citizenship.
Leah Albrecht, the daughter of Chuck and Debbie Albrecht of Merrifield, was awarded a $20,000 Magnuson Award. Albrecht was the 2002 senior class president at Brainerd High School and she plans to attend North Park University in Chicago.
The following area students were named to the dean's list at Minnesota State University Moorhead: Jill Lash, and Shannon Ward, both majoring in elementary education, both of Brainerd; Teresa Wehseler, medical technician, Ironton; JoAnn Walker, social work, Moorhead and graduate of Pequot Lakes High School; Chad Hassler, computer information systems, Staples; Kristi Hassler, psychology, Staples; Jason Olson, political science, Little Falls; William Black, pre-law, and Richard Hinkle, business administration, graduates of Verndale High School; and Brittany Syfert, mass communications, Akeley.
Michael Yager, Brainerd, has been accepted into the audio technology program at Ridgewater College in Hutchinson for the 2002-03 school year. Yager plans to be involved in the student council.
Kevin Drake, the son of Criston and Cheryl Drake of Brainerd, and Amy Gray, the daughter of Mark and Catherine Gray of Brainerd, graduated from Hamline University. Drake earned a degree in biology and Gray earned a degree in communication studies.
Anna Norlin, Pine River, was named to the second semester dean's list at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. Norlin is majoring in exercise/sport science fitness.
Elizabeth Brand, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Stephan Brand of Baxter, has been named to the second semester dean's list at St. Norbert College in De Pere, Wis.
Ryan Beste, the son of Patrick and Jill Beste of Brainerd, has accepted membership into the National Society of Collegiate Scholars, a non-profit honors organization, at the University of North Dakota.
Alison Engler, Nisswa, was named to the dean's list for the fall 2001 semester at Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colo.
Jeffrey Albertson, the son of Allan and Nancy Albertson of Merrifield, has been named to the 2002 homecoming committee at Concordia College in Moorhead. Albertson is a sophomore and is majoring in history and political science.
Mac Caughey of Fort Ripley was named to the spring semester president's honor list at North Dakota State College of Science in Wahpeton, N.D. Caughey is majoring in diesel technology.
The following students who graduated from Brainerd High School in 2002 are recipients of an Alworth Scholarship worth between $4,300 to $4,600: Kirsten Anderson will major in biology/pre-medicine at the University of Wisconsin, Madison; Kristina Bird will major in biology/pre-medicine at Viterbo University; Amy Kittelson will major in biology at St. Thomas; Breanna Paradeis will major in chemistry/pre-medicine at the University of Wisconsin, Madison; and Kristin Walker will major in chemical engineering/chemistry at Notre Dame.
Kathleen and Christina Holden, the daughters of Tim and Jacque Holden of Baxter, were named to the spring dean's list at the University of Minnesota, Duluth.
Amanda Simons, the daughter of Angel Oehrlein of Garrison and the granddaughter of John and Ruth Jansen of Brainerd, graduated with an associates in arts degree at North Hennepin Community College. She will be attending the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, this fall to major in nursing.
Adam Ewert, the son of Rita and Bruce Ewert of Brainerd, graduated from Macalester College with a degree in English.
