Motorists leaving for work this morning may have run into unexpected delays because of a sudden heavy rainfall that left standing water as high as 1 1/2 feet high in some city streets.
According to the DNR, 2.3 inches of rain fell in Brainerd between 8 and 9 a.m. today.
Brainerd City Engineer Jeff Hulsether said the sudden rainfall created flooding problems in several spots throughout the city, including North Fifth Street and Kingwood, North Eighth Street and Kingwood and between West Washington Street and Northwest Sixth and Charles streets. There were other isolated cases of standing water in south Brainerd, he said.
During the heavy rainfall, the Brainerd Fire Department responded to a home on Charles Street where a woman reported her basement window caved in, filling her basement with water.
Firefighters also responded to a garage fire at a home near the Gull River bridge where lightning may have caused the fire.
