20 years ago (1989)

Retiring after 19 years on the school board, Wayne Larson knows the board hasn't always been a synchronized machine. The dean of the panel has been in the hot seat more than once, and has felt the wrath of parents and fellow board members alike.

30 years ago (1979)

Sue Huff of Baxter will be celebrating her first anniversary at her home on July 28. But it won't be a normal celebration; it will be the first anniversary of her heart transplant at University Hospital.

40 years ago (1969)

In a ride with Sheriff Chuck Warnberg on Saturday night, reporter Les Sellnow covered an officer at the Blazer night club being stoned and unconscious, his fellow officer kicked in the groin, and a mob fight averted at the Nisswa Liquor Store, among other acts.

60 years ago (1949)

The economy-minded Brainerd City Council was confronted with a demand for pay hikes from water and light employees. They look for an increase between $24 and $70 a month and want a five-day, 40-hour week, and time-and-a-half for overtime.

80 years ago (1929)

Mrs. Owen Peaslee, of Kingwood Street, Brainerd, was the only fireworks injury of the recent 4th celebration. She was viewing the display at South Long Lake when someone threw a cannon cracker near her. Trying to escape, she fell and cut her leg.

100 years ago (1909)

One of the most dastardly assaults in the history of Brainerd was made on Mrs. Beaulah Ferris at her home by a tramp painter named Curran in an attempted robbery. He was caught after a chase by neighbors and subdued at gunpoint.
