The steep rise in child poverty and growing number of uninsured children in Crow Wing County and across the state will be among the issues discussed at a "Kids Count Coffee" at 2 p.m. Thursday in Brainerd when officials from Children's Defense Fund Minnesota (CDF) outline findings from the 2007 Kids Count Data Book.
The event will take place at the ISD No. 181 Learning Center, 311 10th Ave. NE in Brainerd. It is free and open to the public, and coffee and refreshments will be served.
Brainerd council to close meeting
Mayor James Wallin has called for a closed session meeting of the Brainerd City Council to consider renewal of the wine, off sale beer, on sale beer and Sunday liquor licenses for Chopper's Bar and Grill at 723 Mill Avenue in Brainerd.
The meeting will be conducted at noon Tuesday in the council chambers at Brainerd City Hall.
Safety School teen leaders needed
Safety School, co-sponsored by Brainerd Community Education and Nisswa/ Baxter Park and Recreation, is a program designed to teach children ages 4-6 a variety of safety rules.
The 2007 Safety School Program will be held at Baxter Elementary School July 16th-July 19th. Hours are 8-11:45 a.m. Monday, and 8:45 to 11:45 a.m. Tuesday through Thursday.
Teen Leaders are responsible for escorting small groups of pre-schoolers to and from classrooms and helping teach safety songs to children throughout the four-day program. Currently only three leaders have registered and the event needs 25.
Community Services hours will be granted to participants. Leaders will also be eligible for a day at the water slide with teen leaders from Nisswa.
