The American League escaped a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the eighth inning to post a thrilling 10-9 victory over the National League Tuesday in the Brainerd Parks and Recreation Department's sixth annual Mid-Summer Classic at Bane Park.
Kyle Crocker earned American League MVP honors by smacking two home runs and knocking in three RBI. Teammate Travis Whirley also homered, scored twice and had three RBI.
The National League MVP was Skyler Murray who went 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
The National League jumped to a 6-0 first-inning lead with singles by Murray, Cody Galloway and Mike Eberhardt. The American League rallied in the third on Cody Stange's single and Crocker's two-run blast to cut its deficit to 8-3.
Nicholas Blum of the National League delivered a pitch Tuesday during the sixth annual Pony League All-Star game at Bane Park in Brainerd.
Whirley stroked a two-out solo homer in the fifth and, after Julius Tamasy singled, Nate Smolke smoked a two-run blast to left field. Crocker hit a lead-off homer in the sixth as the American League crept back to an 8-7 deficit.
The American League assumed a 10-8 lead in the seventh inning as Aaron Pavek and Ken Ebinger both singled and Wiley Radomski walked to load the bases. A single by Whirley and a fielder's choice by Tamasy gave the American League its two-run lead.
In the final inning, Taylor Bateman drew a walk and, with two outs, Nicholas Blum and Tyler Alters both walked to load the bases. Rob Veith beat out a dribbler to first that was bobbled, allowing one run to score, but in the confusion, a throw to second resulted in the final out.
