Norman Harkcom

STAPLES -- Norman Harkcom, 61, Staples, died Thursday, June 29, 2000, at his home.

He was born March 21, 1939, in Staples to Floyd and Mildred (Dickman) Harkcom. He grew up in Staples and attended Staples High School. He joined the Air Force on July 20, 1956, serving as a flight mechanic until July 23, 1960, and then serving in the reserves for two years. He married Ella Mae Carlson in South Carolina. They lived there until 1961. He returned to Staples and worked in many areas as a mechanic and in road construction. He moved back to South Carolina in 1976 and returned to Staples in 1984.

Survivors include a daughter, Renee Long, Fort Iron, S.C.; three sons, John, Williamston, S.C., Vernon, Grey Court, S.C., and Al, Atlanta, Ga.; a sister, Carol "Sue" Gosse, Staples; two brothers, Harold, Staples, and James, Fairbanks, Ark.; and five grandchildren.

His parents and a grandson died earlier.

Services will be 2 p.m. Friday at the Brenny Funeral Home in Staples with the Rev. Dan Almquist officiating. Burial will follow at Evergreen Hill Cemetery.

Friends may call from noon to 2 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
