DEERWOOD -- John Wilkie Rahto, 71, Littlefork, and formerly of Nokay Lake, died Tuesday, July 3, 2001, in Littlefork.
He was born May 5, 1930, in Jewell, Iowa, to John and Sena (Koster) Rahto. He moved to Pine Center in 1936 and lived there until 1941. He then moved back to Jewell and graduated from Jewell High School in 1948. He married Geraldean "Geri" Leibold July 18, 1953, in Brainerd. He was an Army veteran serving in the Korean War. Following the military he lived in Brewster until 1956. In 1956, he moved near Pennock until 1968, then moved to a farm near Brainerd until 2000 and then he moved to Littlefork. He was a member of the Minnesota Farmers Union for 48 years, the Minnesota Tiber Producers Association, served on the Blue Ox Co-op Board, the Board of Long Lake Mutual Insurance, Nokay Lake Town Board and was the 1990 Minnesota Forestry Associations "Logger of the Year." He also was a member of the Walter Scott Erickson American Legion Post No. 557 of Deerwood, the Salem Lutheran Church in Deerwood. He worked in the area for many years as a logger.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, John and Thomas Rahto, both of Brainerd; four daughters, Judith Thorson, Jacquelynn Britton and Margaret Hillman, all of Brainerd, and Teresa Medecke, Littlefork; two brothers, Richard Rahto, Jewell, Iowa, and James Rahto, Shoreview; 17 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
His parents and two infant sons died earlier.
Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at the Salem Lutheran Church in Deerwood with Greg Meyer, associate in ministry, officiating. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery in Nokay Lake Township.
Friends may call from 5-8 p.m. Friday at the Koop Funeral Home in Crosby and an hour before services Saturday at the church.
