WALKER -- Cass County Veterans Service Officer John Reuter was back at work Tuesday in anticipation of the county board's formal action to lift his suspension Tuesday night.
The board, meeting in Pillager Tuesday night, voted to lift the Feb. 6 suspension with pay and reinstate Reuter to his job.
"He didn't get convicted, so it would just get hung up another couple years in court and cost the county legal fees," said Board Chair John Stranne, reflecting on the reinstatement conclusion he reached with fellow board personnel committee member Glenn Witham after the two reviewed Reuter's case.
Commissioner Jim Demgen voted against the reinstatement.
Reuter, 51, Walker, was charged Jan. 26 with fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct.
On June 11, Beltrami County Attorney Timothy Faver, acting as special county prosecutor for this case, signed a letter dismissing charges against Reuter, based on a Minnesota Court of Appeals decision involving a Mille Lacs County case.
That court ruling stipulated additional evidence must be provided to jurors to back up a single statement. If two statements conflict as to the location of an event, as in Reuter's case, they cannot be used to support each other.
