The Brainerd VFW baseball team split against Little Falls on June 29 and took two games from St. Cloud Apollo June 28.
Brainerd won the first game against Little Falls 6-3. Three Brainerd pitchers -- Matt Aberle, Drew Boland and Kevin Mertens -- limited Little Falls to three hits while striking out eight.
Leading hitters for Brainerd were Jason Goerges, 2-for-3 with three runs scored and two stolen bases, and J.P. Platisha, who was 1-for-3 with four RBI.
Brainerd lost the second game against Little Falls 11-5. Lance Herbst took the loss, pitching five innings and allowing only one earned run.
Jason Goerges and Ben Winterfeld each were 2-for-4.
Brainerd swept Apollo 9-6 and 20-3.
Herbst, Ryan Browning and Winterfeld all had two hits in the first game against Apollo. Winterfeld pitched a complete game on the mound.
Leading Brainerd at bat were Joe Tautges (2-for-2, two doubles, three RBI); Platisha (3-for-4, three RBI); Winterfeld (2-for-3, double, triple, four RBI); and Goerges, Dan Abear and Kyle Tholen (all 2-for-4).
Minnesota PGA Tour event finishes at Pines
A 7-over-par 79 gave 16-year-old Derrick Whiting of Carlos the overall boys' championship in the Minnesota PGA Tour Event June 27 at the Pines at Grand View Lodge.
A pair of 80s made 17-year-old Christin Thompson of International Falls and 18-year-old Cathy Knutson the girls' champions.
Tyler Whiting of Carlos won the boys' 12-13 division with a score of 86. Chris Olson of Paynesville shot an 81 to win the boys' 14-15 division. Kassandra Wells of Rochester shot an 85 to win the girls' 14-15 division.
The one-day tourney attracted 74 players from Minnesota, North Dakota, Wisconsin and Canada.
