Open Forum
Open Forum: Family fun found at the Lunkers' game
Vox Pop
Why can't the city, county and school board promote from within? Are there no qualified people for grade school principal, or police chief, fire chief? How much does it cost to go outside the area and pay search fees to companies and then the moving expenses to bring in strangers? It is not very encouraging to current employees to want to make a career here.
Open Forum
A small town in Nebraska just passed a law making it a crime to hire an illegal immigrant. They said they prefer to give the jobs to the citizens of this country. These cities and states have had to resort to this because the federal government, which should address this issue but won't, does not care. One legislator, who opposed the town's new law, went so far as to say this country was built on immigrants and we should remember that. What she forgot to say was the people she is talking about, came in the front door, the legal way.
Other opinion: State fees
A new birth defect research program that will help the Minnesota Department of Health track such defects so the department can establish targeted prevention services? It's hard to argue with that. How about a program that may help Minnesota couples contemplating divorce to find a way to reconcile? If it works, it, too, would be worthwhile.
Other opinion: Energy
By now it may be becoming apparent to most Americans that no single energy technology comes without its faults. Midwestern farmers still see ethanol as a viable tool in the arsenal, but the shine has rubbed off somewhat. Oil? Not working out too well in the Gulf right now.
Guest column
