Fishing report

Outdoor News

BRAINERD/NISSWA AREA

Lindy Rigs tipped with redtails or leeches are producing walleyes in 16 to 20 feet on Gull Lake and North Long Lake. The six- to 10-foot weedlines of most lakes are holding bass and sucker minnows are producing northern pike on the deep weeds of Gull, North Long, and Round Lake. Panfish action remains best in the mid-depth weeds.

LAKE_MILLE LACS

East - Limits of keepers and several big walleyes have been taken off the 22- to 27-foot gravel with crawlers and leeches during the day. Slip bobbers and leeches remain the best option at night on nine- to 14-foot rocks. Muskie reports are limited, but smallmouths are an easy catch on the rocks and docks.

West - Walleye action remains strong during the day on the tops and edges of the flats. Spinner rigs or live-bait rigs tipped with crawlers or leeches have worked best. At night, slide off the edge of the mud with slip bobbers and leeches in 28 to 32 feet. Most rock points now are holding smallmouth bass and the pike action has been decent on the weedlines in St. Alban's Bay.

LEECH LAKE AREA

Walleyes are hitting crawlers and leeches in 16 to 18 feet off Otter Tail Point and Stoney Point. The rock piles and reefs on the south end also have produced daytime walleye action in 15 to 20 feet. During the evening, crankbaits are the ticket in 11 to 18 feet off Cedar Point, Sand Point, and Breezy Point. Muskie action is limited and Pine Point is worth noting for a few perch. The best bass reports are coming from Boy Bay, Sucker Bay, and Minnesota Island.

RAINY LAKE

Crawlers and leeches are turning walleyes in Saginaw Bay over 10 to 12 feet. The reefs around American Narrows are giving up walleyes in 32 to 34 feet. Look to Black Bay for walleyes and crappies in eight to 10 feet and the Brule area for walleyes at similar depths. Pike action has consisted mainly of small fish from the weeds.

LAKE WINNIBIGOSHISH

Lindy Rigs and leeches are turning walleyes in 18 to 24 feet on the north-end humps and main-lake bars such as Sugar, Moses, Horseshoe, and Snaghole. There's an evening bite in eight to 10 feet off Little Stony Point with jigs and minnows. If the wind is hitting them, the points on the west side also produce fish in eight to 12 feet. Small pike remain active and the best perch reports are coming from 20 feet on the southeast corner of the lake.

ALEXANDRIA AREA

Lake Miltona is producing walleyes in 20 to 40 feet during the day via leeches or crawlers and there is an evening bite with crankbaits along the weedlines. On Lake Reno, spinners and crawlers are triggering walleyes in 12 to 20 feet. Panfish action is slow, but the weedlines of Lake Le Homme Dieu, Lake Carlos, and Lake Darling are producing bass.

BATTLE LAKE

Walleyes are hitting leeches or small sucker minnows in 16 to 24 feet on West Battle Lake. Crawlers are working best in 16 to 22 feet on Otter Tail Lake, while leeches are the best option in 16 to 20 feet on lakes such as Big Pine, Little Pine, Rush, East Battle, and Ten Mile. Sunfish have moved to seven to 12 feet on lakes Dead, Deer, Stalker, Silver, and Blanche. CowGirls have raised some muskies on the deep weeds of West Battle and bass remain active on all lakes.

BEMIDJI AREA

Lindy rigs and leeches are producing walleyes on Lake Plantagenet in 10 to 15 feet. Crawlers are working best on Lake Bemidji in 10 to 20 feet. There's an evening crankbait bite for walleyes on the bars of Cass Lake. Bluegills are shallow and crappies are cruising the weedlines of most lakes. Look to the weedlines of Bemidji, Plantagenet, and Cass for muskies.

CROSBY AREA

Jigs and plastics are producing walleyes in the deep holes of the Mississippi River. Trout continue to be caught early in the day with Rapalas or live bait on the Huntington Pit, Snowshoe Pit, and Manuel Pit - most are down about 25 to 30 feet. Clearwater Lake is producing crappies and sunfish in eight to 12 feet, while lakes such as Big Mahnomen, Little Mahnomen, Nokay, and June are safe bets for sunfish in less than 12 feet. Work the six- to 12-foot weeds on all lakes for bass and pike.

CROSS LAKE AREA

Leeches under bobbers or on Lindy Rigs are producing walleyes in 22 to 28 feet on Pelican Lake and Whitefish Lake. Largemouth bass action remains strong on the docks and shallow weeds throughout the area with spinnerbaits and plastics and smallmouth are being caught off the rocks on the Whitefish Chain. Crappies have moved into eight to 14 feet and sunfish into 12 to 14 feet on most lakes.

DETROIT LAKES

Leeches are turning walleyes in 17 to 20 feet on lakes Melissa, Sallie, Big Cormorant, and Big Detroit. Look for sunfish on the weedlines of these same lakes and crappies suspended over 17 feet. Topwater baits thrown over the weed tops are producing muskies on Sallie, Big Detroit, and Pelican Lake.

DULUTH AREA

Topwater baits are triggering muskies on the shallow structure of Island Lake and the St. Louis River. Leeches are the ticket for walleyes at Fish Lake and Whiteface Lake in 12 to 15 feet. Fish Lake also is producing crappies in eight to 10 feet. Reports off Lake Superior have been limited.

EAST-CENTRAL MINN

The 12- to 18-foot weedlines of Green Lake are holding a mixed bag of fish including walleyes, panfish, and northern pike. Hit the Rum River for walleyes and smallmouth bass or the Mississippi River for catfish and smallmouth. The weedlines of Blue Lake and Elk Lake are worth noting for largemouth bass and northern pike.

ELY AREA

Smallmouth bass are cruising the shorelines and hitting live bait or artificial lures at Snowbank Lake and Burntside Lake. Spoons or minnows are turning a few lake trout over 25 to 40 feet on Snowbank and Burntside as well. Farm Lake is providing the best walleye bite in six feet with minnows or leeches. Crawlers are turning a few 'eyes on Snowbank in eight to 24 feet. Small northern pike are an easy catch on all lakes in eight to 15 feet.

EMILY AREA

An occasional walleye is caught on Ruth Lake in 18 to 20 feet with leeches and crawlers. Trolling Rapalas on the weedlines of West Fox Lake has produced northern pike early and late in the day. Throw plastics on Ruth for largemouth bass and crankbaits on Mitchell Lake for smallmouths. Lake Emily started giving up sunfish in six feet.

HACKENSACK AREA
