20 years ago (1987)

It's the day before Independence Day. The government does survive and for that, we should proudly wave the flag this Fourth of July. We must thank the people who, without benefit of computer or word processor, wrote the Declaration of Independence.

30 years ago (1977)

The city council voted to use a $217,000 federal grant to help finance a storm sewer project on southeast Maple Street.

40 years ago (1967)

Darcy Hendricks walked off with top honors in the "most unusual pet" category at the Brainerd Recreation pet show. Her pet is a fox.

60 years ago (1947)

Thirtyone building permits totaling $73,850 were issued during June. This number is over June 1946 when 20 permits totaling $56,600 were issued.

80 years ago (1927)

Considered the fastest game of the season the YMCA took the ballgame last evening from the northeast team by the score of 1-0. Laurels go to Whitlock who made his first start of the season for the YMCA and sent 11 men to the bench via the strikeout route.

100 years ago (1907)

There will be an old time celebration of the Fourth of July at Crow Wing this year. Sports of all kinds, dancing etc. The train will leave Brainerd at 1:30 p.m. and will leave Crow Wing at 11 p.m.
