New York Mills history highlighted

NEW YORK MILLS - "Then and Now: Historical Photographs of New York Mills" opens in the New York Mills Regional Cultural Center gallery Thursday.

The show will be open to the public at no charge through July 25.

More than 60 historical photographs from the late 1800s to the present make up the show. The photographs are contemporary reprints of photographs in the collections of the Ottertail County Historical Society and the East Ottertail History Museum.

The subjects represented include architecture, the lumber business, railroads, schools and teachers, businesses and historical figures such as Fred Pilakoff, the Finnish Lion. Two photographs show the Northern Pacific train wreck two miles west of New York Mills in April 1913. There also is a special collection of four photographs of the building in which the New York Mills Regional Cultural Center now owns from the earliest years after it was built by Oluf Pary.

The exhibit is one of the feature events at this weekend's Fourth of July celebration - and the 125th anniversary of New York Mills. The gallery will be open at 8 a.m. until just before the fireworks in New York Mills on Saturday and from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday.

Ranson, Travis and Jonny to perform

NEW YORK MILLS - Ben Ranson and Travis and Jonny will perform at the New York Mills Regional Cultural Center at 7:30 p.m. July 10.

Cost is $5 and includes Ranson's newly released CD, "Eighteen Wheels of Pain." The young artists write and perform an eclectic style of original music.

Composing and recording "Eighteen Wheels of Pain" took Ranson two and a half years of trial and error. Ranson is now writing material for another album.

Travis and Jonny is a folk band, sharing lyrics about modern-day issues. It's folk music that does some soul-searching and exploration and doesn't just tell story after story of people who are hopelessly down on their luck or overcoming adversity with perseverance of the spirit.
