By a 4-1 vote the Brainerd School Board approved a $1,850 increase in its annual lease payment to the Brainerd Civic Center. Board member Don Thomas, who cast the dissenting vote, said it costs too much for what we're getting out of it.

The Brainerd School Board adopted a resolution to construct a diagnostic center for handicapped children. The Minnesota Department of Public Health announced that they will provide a $110,000 grant toward the $220,000 cost of the building.

The Senior Pee Wees of Brainerd scored a 10-9 win over Crosby-Ironton in baseball here, scoring three in the bottom of the seventh to win. The Whitey Skoog-coached team started Ellsworth Burrell on the mound, followed by Billy Selisker and Bob Gallivan.
80 years ago (1929)
Captain Roscoe Fawcett tied the course record at Breezy Point with a 71 during a tune-up for the 10,000 Lakes Tournament. If he'd had his putter working on the ninth and 18th greens of a brilliant round he would have had a wonderful 69.
100 years ago (1909)
The First National Bank and Citizens State bank have installed Brandt automatic cashiers, which are something original. They are fitted with keys like an adding machine. When the proper key is touched they will make change for a dollar.
