CHICKAMAW BEACH -- The city of Chickamaw Beach is offering rewards in an effort to secure the return of its welcome sign.
The city of about 100 residents is offering $250 for the return of its sign, which was believed to have been stolen on June 23. Mayor Don Van Vorst, the contact for this reward, may be reached at (218) 587-3212.
A $500 reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for the theft. Anyone with information may call the Cass County Sheriff's Office at (218) 547-1424 or 1-800-450-2677.
Chickamaw Beach is about 1 1/2 miles north of Pine River and is located on Norway Lake.
June rainfall was nearly 6 inches
Rainfall in Brainerd totaled 5.85 inches in June, 1.18 inches above the 10-year average.
The year-to-date precipitation total is 14.44 inches, just slightly above the average of 14.36 inches.
June's high temperature of 88 degrees was recorded on June 16. The month's low temperature of 38 degrees was recorded June 1.
Keystone assessed fines
Keystone Automotive Industries MN Inc., Brainerd, was assessed a civil penalty of $30,730 for violating the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations, the department's administration in St. Paul announced recently.
An investigation of Keystone Automotive Industries on April 16, revealed violations.
Violations included: Failing to enter a hazardous material description on shipping papers in the manner required; failing to train hazardous materials employees as required; failing to conduct random alcohol testing and random controlled substances testing at an annual rate required; failing to maintain inquiries into driver's driving record in driver's qualification file; failing to maintain medical examiner's certificate in driver's qualification file; and failing to require a driver to prepare driver vehicle inspection report.
The investigation was conducted by a representative of the Minnesota Department of Transportation, Office of Motor Carrier Services through a partnership with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.
TCC accepting applications for awards
Tri-County Community Action is accepting applications for awards and scholarships in Crow Wing, Morrison and Todd counties. The scholarships are sponsored by the National Head Start Association.
Awards include the Parent of the Year Award, Beating the Odds Award, Father of the Year Award, Eugenia Boggus Leadership Award, Ann Phipps Memorial Scholarship and the Phyllis J. Jones Memorial Scholarship.
The Parent of the Year Award recipient will receive a $1,500 award, a commemorative plaque and an all-expense-paid trip to the national parent conference in Salt Lake City, Utah, in December of 2004. The applicant must be a Head Start parent in the 2002-2003 school year, volunteered in the Head Start program, while making strides in self-sufficiency. A one-page summary describing personal goals is also needed.
The Beating the Odds Award recipient will receive a $1,000 award and a commemorative plaque. This award is presented to a Head Start parent who overcame stumbling blocks and persevered through hardship towards self-sufficiency. The applicant must have volunteered in the Head Start program and include a one-page summary describing their personal goals.
The Father of the Year Award recipient will receive a $500 award and a commemorative plaque. The applicant must be a current Head Start father who best models increased educational involvement and personal responsibility in the lives of his own children, as well as improved personal development resulting from his Head Start experience. Three letters of reference are also required.
The Eugenia Boggus Leadership Award recipient will receive a specially designed plaque. The applicant of this award must be a staff member, parent, director, or a friend who demonstrates outstanding leadership qualities while working in some capacity with Head Start.
The Ann Phipps Memorial Scholarship recipient will receive a $1,500 scholarship and is given to a Head Start parent furthering their education or training.
The Phyllis J. Jones Memorial Scholarship recipient will receive a $1,500 scholarship and must be a Head Start Graduate currently enrolled or planning to enroll in a four-year or two-year community college, technical or vocational school.
