Drunken drivers will be the target of area law enforcement during the July 4 holiday.
As part of the "You Drink & Drive, You Lose," national mobilization, area law enforcement agencies will work overtime to arrest and prosecute impaired drivers.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported alcohol-deaths increased from 15,976 in 1999 to 16653 in 2000, the first increase since 1995.
From July 3-13, the Brainerd District of the State Patrol will target drunken drivers in Crow Wing, Cass, Aitkin, Morrison, Mille Lacs, Hubbard and Kanabec counties as part of the Safe and Sober -- NightCAP Wave program. Troopers will work in the afternoon and night to stop as many cars as possible to detect drunken drivers and get them off the road.
