The following area students were named to the spring dean's list at the College of St. Scholastica in Duluth: Amy Oakes, Brainerd, working on a degree in physical therapy; Mara Prusak, Brainerd, nursing; and Melissa Chitwood, Backus, nursing.
The following area students graduated from Saint John's University: Andrew Peterson, the son of Hal and Edie Peterson of Brainerd, who pursued a degree in economics; Brian Kalinoski, the son of Stanley and Mary Kalinoski of Brainerd, psychology; Luke Feierabend, the son of Craig and Cathy Feierabend of Brainerd, social science; Brandon Thomas, the son of Brett and Vicki Thomas of Baxter, nursing; and Desiree DeRosier, the daughter of Joe DeRosier of Fort Ripley and Ginny Vickerman of St. Cloud, social work.
Christopher Studer, Brainerd, graduated from South Dakota State University. Studer earned a bachelor's of art and science degree.
Nathan Miller, the son of Randy and Wendy Miller of Brainerd, was named to the spring dean's list at Crown College in St. Bonifacius. Miller, a 2000 graduate from Lake Region Christian School, will be a junior this fall. He is majoring in English and is a member of the men's soccer team.
Naomi Miller, the daughter of Randy and Wendy Miller of Brainerd, graduated summa cum laude and was named to the deans' list at Crown College in St. Bonifacius. Miller received a degree in English.
Kristine Emery of Brainerd and Rachel Droogsma of Baxter were named to the spring dean's list at Winona State University.
Nicholas Schaden, the son of Mr. and Mrs. James Schaden of Baxter, earned a bachelor's of science degree from Brown University in Providence, R.I.
Brian Rhett, the son of Tom and Kim Rhett of Pillager, and Jenny Harne, the daughter of Kris Buscho of Motley and Mike Harne of Brainerd, were named 2002 participants in Boys' State and Girl's State respectively. The juniors, who attend Pillager High School, learned about Minnesota government at the city, county and state levels. Harne attended the camp at Bethel College and Rhett attended the camp at St. John's University.
Brianna Lester of Baxter is a recipient of a $2,500 Mike Harper Leadership scholarship that is renewable for three years from the ConAgra Foods Foundation. Students may apply for the scholarship if their parent is employed by ConAgra Foods. Lester's father, Theodore Lester, is employed at Louis Kemp Seafood in Motley. Brianna Lester plans to attend St. Mary's University of Minnesota this fall. The scholarship program is coordinated and administrated by Citizen's Scholarship Foundation of America Inc.
Tessa Larson, the daughter of Mike and Diane Larson of Nisswa, attended the Minnesota Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership seminar with 200 other students at Hamline University. Larson is a Brainerd High School junior.
The following area students graduated from Minnesota State University Moorhead: Michele Becker, Abbey Bertschi and Ryan Olson, all of Baxter; Ronald Soukup and Troy Weber, both of Brainerd; Teresa Wehseler, Ironton; Kristi Hassler, Traci Pettitt and Julie Vogel, all of Staples; and Lisa Moon, Fergus Falls, who attended Walker-Hackensack-Akeley High School.
Elementary schools in Staples and Pierz were two of 50 schools that recently received a $200 gift certificate for fitness and athletic equipment from Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota for pre-registering in the statewide nutrition and fitness program, Fitness Fever.
Tiffany Stenglein, the daughter of Greg and Martha Stenglein of Brainerd, was awarded $250 from U.S. Bank High School Award program. Stenglein ranked third in her class with a GPA of 4.216.
Michelle Avelsgard, Staples, was named to the spring dean's list at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Ill.
The following Brainerd students were named to the spring dean's list at Hamline University: Graham Lampa, the son of Frieda Lampa, M'Erin Leitch, the daughter of Michael and Dawn Leitch; Kevin Drake, the son of Criston and Cheryl Drake; and Megan Beck Kohls, the daughter of Susan Beck of Brainerd and Steve Kohls of Nisswa.
The following graduates from Staples-Motley High School recently received scholarships: Carrie Birkholtz and Rachel Domier each received a $300 Tammy Nyhus Memorial Scholarship sponsored by Lakewood Health System in Staples. Birkholtz will attend Concordia College in Moorhead to pursue a career in psychology and Domier will attend Augsburg College to pursue a career as an ophthalmologist. Jessica Gold and Andrew Schock were awarded a $300 scholarship from Lakewood Clinic in Staples. Gold will attend Central Lakes College in Brainerd to pursue a degree in nursing and Schock will attend the University of Mary in Bismarck, N.D., to pursue a degree in physical therapy.
Elizabeth Gronbach and Jesse Adam Smith, both of Rippleside Elementary School in Aitkin, each placed third in the environmental art contest put on by the Northeast Waste Advisory Council. Gronbach's essay was called "House of Reducing" and Smith's was "The Reducing Blob." Lynae Hurd of McGregor Elementary also took third place with an essay called "Make the Right Choice."
Peggy Maxe, the daughter of Ralph and Bonnie Smude of Brainerd, was named to the dean's list for the accelerated degree evening program at the College of St. Scholastica in Duluth. Maxe is majoring in business.
Jericho Duda, Brainerd, and Matthew Hartwig, Little Falls, were named to the spring dean's list at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls.
Adam Albrecht, the son of Debbie and Chuck Albrecht of Merrifield, was named to the spring dean's list at the University of Minnesota's Carlson School of Management. Albrecht is a 2000 Brainerd High School graduate and he is majoring in finance.
Meghan Rahn, the daughter of Michael and Bari Rahn of Brainerd, has been named to the spring semester dean's list at Grinnel College in Grinnel, Iowa.
Kristine Emery, Brainerd, graduated magna cum laude from Winona State University with a degree in psychology.
Kristine Jensen, the daughter of Mark and Karla Jensen of Pierz, was named to the second semester dean's honor list at Concordia College of Moorhead.
Lana Steiff, the daughter of Alan and Julie Steiff of Brainerd, graduated from Bethel College with a bachelor's degree in biology.
The following area students graduated from the College of St. Scholastica in Duluth this spring: Melissa Chitwood, the daughter of Harold and Kathy Chitwood of Backus, earned a nursing degree with highest honors and she plans to work at St. Mary's Duluth Clinic in the Post Coronary Care unit; Alyssa Goldberg, the daughter of Ted and Susan Seep of Baxter, earned a degree in exercise physiology and plans to attend a medical school; Holly Johnson, the daughter of Dale and Becky Johnson of Deerwood, earned a nursing degree with highest honors, received a Benedictine Scholarship and was a leader of Christian Nurses Bible Study; Nicole Lien, the daughter of Robert and Carol Lien of Brainerd, earned a nursing degree; Christy Nagel, the daughter of William and Jane Nagel of Pine River, earned a nursing degree and participated in the Campus Activities Board, SHADOW program, Student Nurses Association, and was a campus representative and innkeeper; Abby Phillips, the daughter of Gary and Kathie Phillips of Brainerd earned a nursing degree with highest honors; Meghan Sebasky, the daughter of Andre and Susan Sebasky of Pillager, earned a biology degree with highest honors and participated in the Pre-Med Club, Campus Representatives, College Republicans, Study Center in Ireland, CABLE -- the campus' newspaper and the Freshman Orientation. She also received the Albert J. Gonska Achievement Award and the Benedictine Scholarship; Linda Tougas, the daughter of Ian and Gertrude Tougas of Fort Ripley, earned a social work degree with high honors and she plans to complete her master's degree at the University of Minnesota-Duluth. She participated in the Social Work Club and was a McNair Scholar and received the Benedictine Scholarship; and Susanne Whirley, the daughter of the late Doyle Whirley and Roy and Gerry Farkey of Brainerd, earned a master's degree in the nurse practitioner field and she plans to work as a nurse practitioner in the area.
