Sophs split at St. Cloud

The Brainerd sophomore VFW baseball team split with St. Cloud Apollo Thursday dropping game one 1-0 and rebounding for a 7-3 game two victory in St. Cloud.

In game one Brainerd was held to four singles by Travis Whirley, Nate Smolke, Brandon Shaw and Seth Helland.

Nick Anderson was tagged with the loss but allowed just one run and one hit in four innings. He struck out five. Trevor Howard pitched the final two innings and gave up just one hit.

Josh Tokarczyk picked up the win in game two. He struck out four, walked none and allowed three earned runs and nine hits in five innings.

Smolke was 3-for-4 with a triple and RBI. Ken Ebinger was 2-3. Cody Galloway was 2-3 with an RBI and Dan Bendzick hit a two-run single.

Brainerd moves to 13-7 and plays Little Falls 11 a.m. Monday at Little Falls.

Freshmen VFW

Tate Rusk was 2-for-2 with a sacrifice fly, double and two RBIs and Reid Mimmack was 2-4 with two RBIs leading the Brainerd freshmen VFW baseball team to a 5-4 game one victory over Pierz Thursday in Brainerd.

Brainerd completed the sweep with a 5-3 game two victory. In that game Brett Jenkins hit a two-run single, Matt Sather added an RBI single and Mac Jones was 2-3 with a double and RBI.

Kevin Peterson tossed a complete-game victory. He struck out two, walked five and allowed three earned runs on three hits in five innings.

Karl Freudenberg earned the game one win. He struck out four, walked three allowed nine hits and three earned runs in seven innings.

Jenkins was 3-4 helping Brainerd to a 14-1-1 record. They host Menahga 11 a.m. Monday at Mills Field.
