Katherine Griffith was named program manager at the PORT Group Homes for boys ages 12-18.
Griffith was previously employed as the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe family services director, as a social worker for the Mille Lacs Band, a coordinator for Stellar Human Services in Bemidji and a school social worker for the White Earth Reservation.
Griffith has a bachelor's degree in sociology from Northland College, Superior, Wis., and a master's degree in counseling and family systems from the University of Wisconsin-Superior.
Credit union board
The 46th annual meeting of the Mid-Minnesota Federal Credit Union resulted in retirement of one board member, the election of a new director and the re-election of two existing board members.
Clare Williams recently announced her retirement after serving a three-year term. Williams previously served as a board member from 1988-1993. Filling her position on the board is Rhonda Smith. Smith, co-owner of Downtown Art and Frame, has been a MMFCU member for nearly 15 years. She is presently president of the Downtown Business Association, a role she has been in for more than four years.
Board incumbents, David Stark and Tom Haglin, were re-elected to three-year terms. A director since 1990, Stark has served in numerous capacities for the board, including executive and grant committees. Stark is an economics/history teacher at Brainerd High School.
Haglin joined the board last year and completed an existing term. He is a member of the credit union's Funds Management Committee. Haglin is part owner of Lindar Corp. in Baxter and has been a MMFCU member for more than 15 years.
The credit union's board of directors are volunteer representatives of the credit union membership. Mid-Minnesota Federal Credit Union is a member-owned financial cooperative with offices in Brainerd, Baxter, Crosby, Little Falls and Staples.
Mid-Minnesota Federal Credit Union received eight national awards for marketing excellence.
The Credit Union Executive Society recognized Mid-Minnesota with three Golden Mirror Awards while the Credit Union National Association acknowledged Mid-Minnesota with five Diamond Awards.
In the Golden Mirror Awards, the credit union received a first and second place for three-color newsletters in 2001 and a Merit Award for a single print ad series of member testimonials.
The Diamond Awards included three first place standings in community public relations event, four-color newsletters in the fall 2001 and three-color newsletters in the summer 2001. Two Merit Awards were given -- one for a three-color newsletter in summer 2001 and another for a complete campaign.
Awards recognized three individuals involved in creating winning entries. Marty Kelly, vice president of marketing, Marnie Perfetti, marketing assistant, at the credit union and Tom Schmidt, creative director at Range Printing, which exclusively handled the award-winning print materials and ad design. The awards were presented at a conference in Seattle. It was the third year in a row the credit union gained Golden Mirror recognition.

Services are targeted to the salaried employees and include access to an office with training center, eLearning capabilities and the latest computer technology for use of candidates. Job leads will be collected and the service works with candidates to assist as they approach the next job.
Right Management Consultants stated they plan to post openings from the area and set up a job fair in the future.
NISSWA -- West Bend Mutual Insurance Co. in West Bend, Wis., recently honored Nisswa Insurance Agency Inc. for outstanding performance in the company's agency incentive program, Partners in Excellence.
The program measures six areas of an agency's performance, including profitability, premium volume and underwriting. Bob and Joyce Sheplee started the family-owned business in 1980 and were joined by family members Pam and Dan Jager and Pete Olson. About 600 independent agencies participated in the program.
Russell & Herder wins
Russell & Herder Advertising, Brainerd, was the only Minnesota agency to win a national Gold ADDY Award at the American Advertising Federation's national awards ceremony on June 8 in Miami.
Russell & Herder received one of 131 national Gold Addy Awards presented for its "Voice Activated Dialing" TV commercial for Midwest Wireless, Mankato. The awards have more than 600,000 entries with two-tenths of 1 percent of entries receiving a national Gold ADDY Award, Russell & Herder reported. Competition begins at the local level, proceeds to 14 regional competitions, before the national finals.

The Brainerd Lakes Area Chambers of Commerce's Business After Hours monthly event is set from 5 - 7 p.m. on July 9 at Brainerd International Raceway, 5523 Birchdale Road, Brainerd.
Changes at BIR will be highlighted, including a tour of the grounds and drawing for prizes. Attendees will have an opportunity to drive the 3-plus mile track in a brand new sports car.

Jennifer Nangle joined Bursch Travel, Baxter, following the business' recent expansion.
Nangle will be a full-time employee for both leisure and corporate travel. Nangle graduated from the Central Lakes College travel planner program and has four years experience in the travel industry. She has traveled extensively in the United States and Europe. She also is an ambassador with Brainerd Lakes Area Chambers of Commerce.
Hours set July 11
The Brainerd Lakes Area Chambers of Commerce is hosting the July Business Before Hours from 7:30 - 8:30 a.m. July 11 at the new building shared by Bursch Travel/American Express and Pioneer Windows, Doors and Cabinets, 1655 Excelsior Road N., Baxter.
