NISSWA -- It's a flashback to the '60s, when rock and roll contests were entertaining community showcases for area musicians, as the Nisswa Volunteer Fire Department revives a Battle of the Bands on July 7.
The annual Nisswa Freedom Fest firemen's street dance will have a nostalgic twist this year, as lake country residents get a chance to cast their votes for their favorite band in a non-stop, two-group performance. All proceeds from the family event will help finance firefighting training and equipment for the department.
The Battle of the Bands will feature Silent Partner and The Retractions, two band that are popular at lake country community events and area night clubs. The bands will appear on two separate stages, alternating half-hour sets from 5:30 p.m. to midnight. Music will be steady for nearly six hours, except for a break for the Nisswa Chamber of Commerce's Freedom Day parade at 7 p.m.
The firefighters and Nisswa Jaycees will serve food and beverages. The stages will be set up at the Nisswa Community Center, and the fire department will operate ballot boxes where the public can cast Battle of the Bands votes.
The event will take place rain or shine.
