Restaurant with a sense of whimsy opens in Brainerd
Brainerd's newest restaurant has a bit of whimsy in menu names and includes the three clocks on the wall that indicate the time of day in Cairo, Brainerd/Baxter and Venus.

Little Falls motorcyclist injured
LITTLE FALLS - A 39-year-old Little Falls man was injured after the motorcycle he was driving went off the road and struck an address sign Friday.

THEFT - Michael Pikula reported at 6 a.m. Friday that his son's bike was left at the park at Mountain Ash Road and when they returned to pick it up it was gone.

JUNE 28 - 80 years ago (1929) - Two well-dressed bandits held up the Home Oil Station at Ninth and Tamarack at 9:20 p.m. yesterday. They stuck a gun in the ribs of the attendant, threatened to kill him and took $40. It is believed they were the same two who cased the station on Tuesday.

Level 3 sex offender moving to Brainerd
The Brainerd Police Department will host a community notification meeting Tuesday about a Level 3 sex offender who is moving July 1 to the 200 block of Seventh Street North in Brainerd.

Charges filed against father
The father of a 9-month-old girl who died on Father's Day was charged Friday in Mille Lacs County District Court with 13 criminal charges relating to the circumstance's surrounding the child's death as well as a November assault.

LOCAL BRIEFS
The Brainerd Lakes Regional Airport is among five airports in northeast Minnesota that have been awarded more than $2.2 million in grants from the Federal Aviation Administration.

Legislative meeting on Thursday will detail cuts at St. Joseph's
Members of the House Health and Humans Services Policy and Oversight Committee, accompanied by area legislators, are visiting hospitals across Minnesota over the next week to discuss alternative ways to meet the needs of Minnesotans currently receiving General Assistance Medical Care. The program disappears in March.

Unwelcome fire near Welcome Center
A tractor trailer caught on fire at 6:22 a.m. Friday on Highway 371 near the Brainerd Lakes Area Welcome Center south of Brainerd, shutting down traffic in the right northbound lane for six hours. According to Lt. Dave ZumBerge of the Minnesota State Patrol, the semi driver had struck a deer near Kimball and was flagged down by a motorist near the Welcome Center after the deer carcass, which had become lodged in the trailer's rear axle, caused the tractor-trailer to get hot and start on fire.

Dan L. Niederer, 77, Brainerd, passed away on Thursday, June 25, 2009, at St. Joseph's Medical Center in Brainerd.

Elizabeth M. (Elliott) Goatley
BOCA RATON, Fla. - Elizabeth Marion (Elliott) Goatley, of Boca Raton, Fla., passed away on June 16, 2009, in Palm Beach, Fla., at the age of 89.

EMILY - Howard George Lambert, age 98, of Emily, died on June 26, 2009, at the Cuyuna Regional Medical Center in Crosby. He was born on March 7, 1911, in Emily to George and Adealia (Strause) Lambert. Howard spent his entire life on his farm 3 miles south of Emily.

CROSSLAKE - Thomas William Schaal, age 73, passed away June 24, 2009. Capt. Schaal served his country in the Minnesota Army National Guard from 1955 to 1981.

VERNDALE - Clarinda Gumke, age 62, of Verndale, passed away at the St. Cloud Hospital on Thursday, June 25, 2009. Services are planned for Tuesday, June 30, at 1 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Verndale. Visitation will be Monday evening from 5-7 p.m. at the Brenny Funeral Home in Staples and one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be in the Green Lawn cemetery in Verndale.

The DNR will begin accepting applications Wednesday for the 2009 regular archery deer hunts at Camp Ripley near Little Falls. Application deadline is Aug. 14.

Hunters who want to participate in this fall's Minnesota elk hunt may apply for one of 30 licenses to be awarded through a DNR lottery. Application deadline is July 24.

GREEN BAY, Wis. - Aaron Conway and Matt Argyropoulos reached base and scored in the first inning as the Green Bay Bull Frogs completed the two-game sweep of the Lunkers with Friday's 2-1 win at Joannes Stadium.

Bzdok, Bubalo lead Brainerd
Mitch Bzdok hit a grand slam and drove in six runs and Blaine Bubalo hit a solo home run to propel Brainerd's sophomore VFW team to a 13-3 five-inning victory over Litchfield in the first game of a doubleheader Thursday at Adamson Field.

Brainerd routs Park Rapids in doubleheader
Tom Fairbanks went a combined 3-for-6 with 5 RBIs, a two-run home run and scored twice as Brainerd swept Park Rapids in a doubleheader 10-2 and11-4 Friday night at Adamson Field.

William Hung sat at a lonely card table beneath the grandstands of Mills Field. He wore an oversized Brainerd Lakes Area Lunkers jersey, a gift from the team that hired him to increase the gate and entertain the locals at Tuesday's game against last-place Thunder Bay.
