OTHER OPINION: FEC
The confirmation of five members to the Federal Election Commission on Tuesday was the end of a six-month skirmish between the White House and Senate Majority Leader Harry M. Reid, D-Nev. But the years-long battle over appointments to jobs within the federal government continues as scores of men and women eager to serve have languished in confirmation limbo for months, if not years. This is no way to run a government.
OUR OPINION: SHOOTING
It's small consolation to note that Tuesday's shooting at the Morrison County Government Center could have been much, much worse. Gordon K. Wheeler's actions against Morrison County officials in Little Falls could have resulted in multiple deaths and produced a tragedy of epic proportions.
Open Forum: Franken makes Ventura look good
For those who haven't heard, a Canadian judge has just found that a 12-year-old girl was "excessively" punished when her father ruled that she couldn't go on a school trip because she broke Internet rules (she posted pictures of herself on a dating site). He's appealing but the judge did let her go on the trip.
Drawing fair district lines
WASHINGTON - When Barack Obama decided last week to throw off the constraints on campaign spending that go with the acceptance of public financing, he was rightly criticized for rigging the system in his own favor.
I would like to say thank you to two young teenage girls from our community who helped out at the scene of an accident last week that I witnessed. The girls were very brave. There were many adults who drove by and did absolutely nothing. They need to be congratulated for helping the family, and doing what was good for them. You make our community proud.
McCain's terror errors
No one wants to be the first candidate to invoke Sept. 11. As a campaign tactic, 9/11 chest-thumping has become both predictable and tacky. So, John McCain's campaign hit on a creative solution: Invoke Sept. 10.
Open Forum: Good news makes the front page
Wow! Who would have thunk it! Positive news on the state of the economy makes the front page of the Dispatch! There will be those who will argue this issue but I am tired of the doom and gloom perpetuated by the media for years. They seem to relish painting only a black picture, no light at the end of the tunnel and feel if they push the envelope hard enough they can throw this country into a panic because I have already heard those who are loudly whispering: A depression in the offing!
Time to start shooting with a rifle, not a shotgun
It sure isn't easy trying to squeeze everything into a busy, lakes area summer. Especially when it just decided to get here.
Leeches, shiners and nightcrawlers are turning walleyes in 18 to 22 feet at Gull Lake, Round Lake and Pelican Lake. Spinnerbaits or plastics are triggering bass on all lakes and northern pike are taking sucker minnows on the weed edges of most lakes during the day.
Ruffed grouse spring drumming counts are slightly higher than last year despite the concern of some hunters that last fall's harvest didn't meet expectations.
Improving by Leech and bounds
It is, you would think, a good problem to have.
