Fishing
Minnesota Report
By Outdoor News
BRAINERD/NISSWA AREA
Pitch a weedless jig and leech combination in the 13- to 18-foot weedbeds of North Long Lake and Gull Lake for walleyes. The main-lake weeds of most lakes are holding numbers of bass and northern pike. Large sucker minnows and spinnerbaits tend to produce bigger fish. Panfish action is now taking place in 8 to 12 feet on area lakes.
CROSBY AREA
A few walleyes continue to be caught during low-light periods on the Mississippi River and Serpent Lake. Midday hours are best spent chasing panfish and bass on the weed edges of lakes Mahnomen, Black Hoof, East Rabbit, Clinker and Horseshoe. Northern pike are being taken with crankbaits or sucker minnows on most lakes, and trout fishing remains consistent in the pits about 25 to 30 feet from the surface.
CROSSLAKE AREA
Lindy rigs tipped with leeches or redtails are triggering walleyes in 18 to 26 feet at Pelican Lake, Crosslake and the Whitefish chain. Northern pike are hitting spinnerbaits along the weed edges of most lakes, while plastics remain the ticket for bass in 4 to 8 feet. Work the weedlines, docks, or other shaded areas for bigger bass. Look to the weedlines of most lakes for panfish, as well.
HACKENSACK AREA
Largemouth and smallmouth bass action has been excellent in this area with lakes such as Birch, Ten Mile, Stony, and Webb leading the way. Walleye reports have dropped off, but crappies continue to be pulled from many lakes in 12 to 15 feet with minnows. Sunfish activity also is strong with Five Point Lake and Pleasant Lake kicking out nice fish.
LAKE MILLE LACS
EAST - Daytime action has been reduced to a few walleyes on the deep gravel and mud. Some of the best catches are coming with deep-diving crankbaits or leeches and rigs. Slip bobbers and leeches are the way to go on the 8- to 12- foot rocks after sunset. Mayflies have been a big issue this week. Rock-covered areas are producing smallmouths, and muskie reports have been limited.
WEST - A noticeable mayfly hatch may be contributing to a slower day bite, but some fish continue to be caught on spinners tipped with rainbow minnows or crawlers, on the tops and edges of the mud flats. The best action is coming to those using slip bobbers and leeches, after dark, off the flats in 28 to 32 feet of water. The weedlines in St. Alban's Bay started giving up some pike this week.
