ROCHESTER -- The Brainerd Mighty Gulls got back on the winning track as they took the first game of the two-game series by downing the Rochester Honkers 6-3 Thursday night in Northwoods League baseball action.
Devin Thomas picked up the win as he scattered five hits and gave up one run over 7 1/3 innings while striking out eight Honkers. Jason Schlangen and Gordon Dugan pitched a scoreless eighth inning while Dustin Braud fought through trouble in the ninth to close the door on the Honkers.
Brainerd's defense didn't commit an error and turned two double plays.
Leading the way on offense for the Mighty Gulls were leadoff man Steve Adams, who was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, and Daniel Bruce, who was 2-for-5, including a home run.
The Mighty Gulls took an early lead that they wouldn't relinquish when they scored three runs in the second inning and added to that by scoring a run in the fifth and sixth to put the game out of Honkers' reach.
