Judge refuses to grant bail for Robert Blake

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- A judge refused Thursday to grant actor Robert Blake bail until a preliminary hearing reveals details of the evidence against him in the slaying of his wife.

Superior Court Judge Lloyd Nash urged lawyers to set a preliminary hearing date soon, rejecting defense attorney Harland Braun's suggestion that lawyers can't be ready to proceed until November.

Blake has been jailed since his April 18 arrest on charges of murdering Bonny Lee Bakley, who was found shot to death in their car on May 4, 2001.

Blake, 68, sat solemnly and frowned throughout the hearing and answered "yes" only once when the judge asked if the delay was acceptable to him.

The courtroom was jammed with reporters and spectators who included a few show business notables supporting Blake. Among them was actor Scott Wilson, who costarred with Blake in the movie "In Cold Blood," and comedian Mort Sahl.
