Quinn Nystrom, 16, Brainerd, is the American Diabetes Association 2002-2003 National Youth Advocate.
Nystrom was honored at the association's 62nd annual meeting and Scientific Sessions June 14-18 in San Francisco.
Nystrom's duties will include meeting policy makers, promoting increased funding for diabetes research and programs and visiting American Diabetes Association summer camps to encourage other teens to become involved in the fight against diabetes.
Nystrom was chosen because she has demonstrated a commitment to speak out and educate people about diabetes.
Nystrom said in a news release she hopes to advocate for more federal funding for diabetes research and programs and work to end discrimination in schools of children who have diabetes.
Nystrom is a Brainerd High School junior. She was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes when she was 13 and her 10-year-old brother was diagnosed when he was 5. Nystrom and her family are consistently the top fund-raising team in the Brainerd area America's Walk for Diabetes.
