NAPLES, Fla. -- George J. Carney, 73, Naples, Fla., and Brainerd, and formerly of Minneapolis, died Monday, June 26, 2000, at Methodist Hospital of Rochester.
He was born March 10, 1927, in Bemidji. He graduated from Cretin High School in 1945 and the University of Minnesota in 1950. He was the owner and president of Mellema Co. for 35 years.
Survivors include his wife, Sophia "Fiep"; four daughters, Patricia Larson, Joanne Lipinski, Kate Boulanger and Diane Thorpe; three sons, Dave Carney, George J. Carney Jr. and Greg Carney; two stepdaughters, Yvonne Gaudelius and Audrey Macdonald; 17 grandchildren; and three stepgrandchildren.
His first wife, Mary E. Carney, died earlier.
Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at the Church of the Visitation in Minneapolis. Burial will be in Lakewood Cemetery. Memorials are preferred to the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation.
Friends may call from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Gill Brothers Southwest Funeral Chapel of Minneapolis.
