Brandon Schwegel, a lineman from Pine River-Backus, kicked a 30-yard field goal to help the Outstate team conquer the Metro squad 28-21 in the annual high school all-star game at Macalester College Saturday.
Schwegel's field goal, with 12:30 left in the fourth quarter, gave the Outstate team a 28-7 lead.
Brainerd's Mitch Feierabend contributed on defense for the Outstate team at linebacker.
North team splits in Chaska
The North team came back from a 12-2 deficit to defeat the South squad 13-12 Saturday in the Minnesota Lions High School All-Star Baseball Tournament at Chaska Athletic Park.
North, featuring Brainerd Warriors Kyle Berg and Kevin Ericson and Little Falls' Jon Czech, scored four runs in the fifth inning, six in the sixth and one more in the seventh. Ryan Holthaus of St. Cloud Apollo had the game winning hit and Bemidji's Josh Hovde slugged a grand slam in the sixth inning.
The North team (2-1) lost its only game of the weekend as the Metro West team won 7-2.
Johnny Lynch, a left hander from Elk River who the Warriors beat in the first round of the Class 3A playoffs, threw three scoreless innings and struck out five batters.
Czech provided North's only two runs with a two-run home run in the fourth inning. Berg entered the game in the fifth inning and caught the final three innings.
LaPrairie wins boxing crown
Damion LaPrairie from Brainerd defeated Brad Timm in a 10-round unanimous decision Friday night at Black Bear Casino to win the Minnesota State Junior Lightweight title.
LaPrairie, who fought at 130 pounds, is 13-2 in his last 15 fights.
$1,000 softball tourney slated
The 22nd annual Brainerd Men's Invitational Softball Tournament sponsored by Grand Casino Mille Lacs is scheduled for Saturday July 8th and Sunday July 9th at Memorial Field in Brainerd.
All teams are guaranteed three games. In the 2-0 division, a $1,000 first place prize is a available. All other brackets have payouts as well.
This is an open tournament. Entry fee is $130 plus supply your own balls for each game. There will also be a home run contest Saturday evening with an extra $250 added to the pot for the winner. Contact Eryk Haapajoki at 218-829-9359 or 218-824-4231 to sign up.
Area softball team wins tournament
The North Air softball team out of Brainerd recently won the Park Rapids Miller Lite Tournament. The team went 8-1 to capture the tournament.
Games included a 32-28 win over the Barrett Inn, 17-2 over R&R siding, 20-2 over JC Chumleys, 20-4 win over S.A.S., a 27-12 win against Team Industries, Cambridge Chiropractic 20-2.
In the semi-finals Brained defeated Budweiser out of Moorhead 14-13. In the championship game against Foltz Grain of Fargo Brainerd was victorious 27-25.
