20 years ago (1989)

Tim and Pat O'Brien, both of Brainerd, won feature races at North Central Speedway on Saturday. Tim O'Brien paced the Hobby Stock feature, while Pat claimed the Thunder-Bomber feature.

30 years ago (1979)

In what may have been another truck shooting in this area, a grain-loaded semi from Hillsboro, N.D., went off Highway 210 west of Ironton after the left front tire was blown out. A motorist behind the truck heard a gunshot and saw a puff of smoke.

40 years ago (1969)

A trio of adventurous New York City youths is camped just outside of Brainerd, building a raft for a trip down the Mississippi River to the Gulf of Mexico. The raft, to be made of logs and Styrofoam, will be 15-foot long and be steered with a rudder.

60 years ago (1949)

A string of robberies across Minnesota in the past week may be cleared up with the arrest of two Indians, one critical with a gunshot wound to the stomach. The other, who escaped from the robbery attempt at Fort Ripley, was captured near Mille Lacs Lake.

80 years ago (1929)

"Madam Bullock," a bloom grown by Charles Mahlum, county auditor, was adjudged this morning the most perfect peony bloom of any color in the peony show sponsored by the Crow Wing County Garden and Flower Society. Mahlum thus wins the Rotary Cup.

100 years ago (1909)

Four trains, comprising the Barnum and Bailey Circus, passed through Brainerd yesterday evening en route from Little Falls to Duluth. There were many people along the tracks watching to see them go through.
