ST. CLOUD -- A suicide squeeze by Rob Lien Sunday scored two runs and carried the Brainerd Legion team over Cold Spring 4-2 in the fifth-place game of the St. Cloud Silver Star Classic.
Brainerd grabbed a 3-1 lead after 4 1/2 innings with Lien's bunt which scored Joey Tautges from third base and Chris Macy from second.
Adam Hardy, who also recorded the complete-game win, scored the game's first run with a solo homer over the left-field fence in the fourth inning. Ben Winterfeld scored Brainerd's insurance run in the sixth inning wen Tautges singled him in with two outs.
Nick Weiland had a double in the first inning for one of Brainerd's four hits, while Winterfeld had a single in the third. Winterfeld and Tautges, along with J.P. Platisha, are all sophomores and started for an undermanned Brainerd team. Numerous teammates were in Fargo attending a football camp and Brainerd stars Kevin Ericson and Kyle Berg were competing in the Minnesota Lions All-Star Game in Chaska this weekend.
Brainerd lost two games on Saturday to fall to the fifth place game. Billy Tadych started both games for Brainerd and offered up seven walks in a 6-1 loss to Minneapolis Hellanic. Brainerd scored its only run as Matt Means walked, Ty Adams doubled him to third and Bob Brown knocked him in with a sacrifice fly.
Willmar beat Brainerd 8-3 in the second game Saturday as Brown went 2-for-3, Hardy had a double, Platisha recorded an RBI single.
Brainerd lost to Princeton 6-2 in the first game Friday. Princeton scored four runs in first inning and two in the second off starter Mike Zauhar, who suffered four walks in the first two innings.
Brainerd bounced back Friday to beat the St. Cloud Chutes 8-4 in game two. Tim Siekas was 3-for-5 with two runs, Macy finished 3-for-5, Means went 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI and Brown was 2-for-2. Brainerd finished with 14 hits in that game, while Means (2-0) was the winning pitcher.
All games in the Silver Star Classic were with wood bats. Brainerd had only 19 hits in four of its games and completed the tourney with 18 runs in five games.
"We didn't pitch well this weekend and that's why we got beat," Brainerd coach Brett Streiff said. "We didn't pitch well and we didn't hit very well."
