Farmers add up damage

Darrell and Betsy Lins remember the flood of 1997, when some of their calves died after swarming mosquitoes got into their lungs.

Now, the Lins' farm near Badger, close to the Roseau River, is again surrounded by water. With the threat of more mosquitoes and a short supply of hay, the Lins knew the only way to save their herd -- started by Darrell Lins' family more than a century ago -- was to sell.

The couple took a loss by selling cattle before they were ready for market, including eight or nine pregnant cows.

"Sometimes you have to make choices that aren't what you want," Betsy Lins said.

Aid area enlarged

MAHNOMEN -- The Federal Emergency Management Agency on Monday expanded the previous federal disaster declaration for flooded areas of northwest Minnesota.

With the latest rainstorms and flooding in the northern part of the state, individual assistance was added for Kittson, Koochiching, Lake of the Woods, Mahnomen, Marshall, Norman and Red Lake counties.
