On balancing work and family
My first workplace column, in 1998, was about how single people got stuck at the office more often than those with kids and how they could defend their time. Now, my final column before I go on maternity leave for six months is about how parents decide whether to work and how they handle it after a child is born.

Royal was born July 25, 1921, in Pine River, Minn., to Roy and Ida (Jokela) Degnan. Royal grew up in Pine River and moved to St. Mathias in 1953. He served in the Army during WWII and was a lifetime area farmer.

Martin was born Jan. 13, 1918, in Rochester, Minn., to Arnold and Louise (Nickel) Musolf. He graduated from Pequot Lakes High School in 1938. Martin worked in Chicago and Minneapolis. He enlisted in the Air Force in 1941. He was in service during WWII, Korea and Vietnam wars, serving in Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, Sicily, Italy, France, Germany, England, Korea and Vietnam.

IGNACIO, Colo. - Tracy Lenette Lander, age 50, of Ignacio, Colo., and formerly of Brainerd, passed away June 18, 2007, after a courageous battle with cancer. She was born in Detroit Lakes, Minn., and graduated from Brainerd High School in 1975. She attended Brainerd Community College then settled in the Durango, Colo., area that she loved. She owned and operated "The Memory Box" gift shop in Bayfield, Colo., until the time of her illness.

Jeans Cruz, a former Army scout who helped capture Saddam Hussein, lives in a bullet-riddled Bronx housing project, addled by nightmares about Iraq, voices in his head and the smell of dried blood in his nostrils. As Post reporters Dana Priest and Anne Hull recently described his situation, Mr. Cruz began cutting his arms and extinguishing cigarettes on his skin after returning home from Iraq. Mental health counselors characterized him as depressed and anxious, and, shortly after he re-enlisted in the Army, he was discharged because of a personality disorder. A Department of Veterans Affairs psychologist diagnosed post-traumatic stress disorder.
It's tornado time, so keep an eye on the sky
Last week I wrote about tornadoes and the Fujita Scale, introduced in 1971 by Dr. T. Theodore Fujita to categorize tornados by intensity and area and to estimate wind speeds. Shortcomings led to the 1992 updating that became known as the Modified Fujita Scale.

Even a week between trips can bring major changes in where fish are located. Fishing a new lake throws a whole new set of issues in the mix.
